Maybe the frustration when things go wrong is so overwhelming people don't want to spend the time to look.
You've both been put in a crappy situation by the management of Amazon.
Amazon's decision not to put their customer service on their "Help" or "Contact Us" pages means that after you experience a problem you end up searching for their number for an unreasonable amount of time.
After you finally find it, you call the number and then are put on hold for quite a while as well.
The person on the phone isn't a member of management with decision-making power. I finally did a search on Google and found somebody who has posted the customer service number to his website.
They're somebody that needed a job, and they took this one. He, too, was having a problem and couldn't find the number, so when he finally got it he provided it publicly for people like me. I think it's completely lame for a company to pull this kind of crap -- hiding their phone number to avoid calls -- especially one that won't quit talking about what a high level of customer service they offer.
But I still get thousands and thousands of visitors to this site each month looking for these numbers.
